Toronto - Leslieville Sandwich Room
Sandwiches, Sunday Roasts, and Something to Look Forward To in England
Given our proximity to the St. Lawrence market and my inherited English ability to melt quality cheese on fresh bread, we rarely pick up sammies for lunch or breakfast. An exception was made this past week to deliver lunch to my sister (/new mom!). We also picked up Blondies pizza (cold drink, hot girl of course) to cover our east-end bases.
Leslieville Sandwich Room is a small, diner-esk spot right at Pape and Queen East. Given it was empty when we went in and there were lots of to-go boxes, I do not think this is a destination.
What we ordered: La Morta - focaccia, mortadella, cilantro pesto, fresh mozzarella, pistachio $18 | La Boeuf - focaccia, roast beef, crispy shallots, sharp cheddar, horseradish rose marie $18 | The Good Mornin' - japanese milk bun, eggs, bacon, hash brown, honey kick sauce $16 | Chopped salad - napa cabbage, corn, pickled onion, green goddess dressing $9
Recommend for: Even for starved new parents, these sandwiches proved to be too large; we could each only eat a half, saving the rest for later. Given the fact one sammie could be had for two meals; I came around on the price. Clearly the ingredients were fresh and the bread just made; not too saucy. If it were summer, I would gladly pick up some sandwiches, stop by the Avling for some drinks and then head up to Withrow Park for a hang - or to watch the tennis players at Jimmie Simpson. Put this spot on your 2025 Spring Walk Spots.
Reservations: Not necessary

Memorable Meal? We are in our Post-Christmas, A-Movie-A-Day routine. This special part of the break is often complemented by indulgent eats. The other night - after seeing the new, French Count of Monte Cristo at TIFF - we went to Queen and Beaver for a burger and Guiness (him) and and mussels & fries (me). With the same owners as the Oxley, but a more casual atmosphere, Q&B is one of my favourite places in the City. We have never done a Sunday Roast there, but have put it on our 2025 to do list.
Where am I Eating Next? Today is the Brutalist and Burger Shack. Tomorrow, Baby Girl and Eataly.
What My Friends Are Talking About: I am avoiding friends who find themselves in St. Barths and/or the English Countryside - the text, “Oh my god have you been to Daylesford, in like, the country?” was triggering. So here is a post from The Stanza on hospitality - I particularly enjoyed the part about Italians travelling to Erewhon like we would Uffizi.
Added to My International Must-See List: Obviously Daylesford Farm.
Titanique and Eataly this afternoon for me. Looking forward a Babygirl review!
